Well Said Wednesday: Our Story Sells Our Work

January 12, 2022 in Message Basics

A few months back, I admitted that I had done a podcast…then refused to listen to it or share it!

(If you missed that post, you can read it here.)

One of my lessons from that experience is that it’s the doing that matters, not doing it perfectly. I mean, what is “perfect” anyway?

So I did it again!

Frank Deming of the digital marketing agency Local Business Marketing Solutions kindly invited me back to his podcast. We had a great chat about message and story and how an authentic message will always serve you more than generic content.

You can have a listen here: Marketing Solutions for Local Businesses: Our Story Sells Our Work.

One of the things I love about doing a podcast or a talk is that it’s a great way to chisel your message to its core parts:

  1. Here’s what I’m talking about

  2. Here’s why I care

  3. Here’s why you should care.

Those are the same guard rails that should rein in our written content too, by the way.

It’s just that the consequences are more visible when we are talking. Eyes glaze over and heads start nodding to urge you to get to the point. The podcast gets clicked off, the audience retreats to their phone screens, the Zoom audience looks pretty sleepy.

So I challenge you to get in front of a real, live (or “computer live”) audience. Watch them take in you what you say and see if you aren’t picking up some editing and sharpening input along the way.

By the way, the content planning workshop mentioned at the end of the podcast has been rescheduled to March 16. But the discount code still applies!

“Well Said Wednesday” is a blog by Barbara Govednik, Founder, Content Coach & Message Strategist of 4.23 Communication. It’s published every other Wednesday…ish.
